Skincare Routine Tips For Women In Their 50s

Our skin goes through many hormonal changes through the years and when we hit our fifties those changes to our hormones continue, causing havoc on our skin.  Decreases to collagen levels and elastin levels, damage to skin from sun and environment, lifestyle choices all become apparent on our skin and begin to show when we enter our fifties.

We have gathered all the information you need from what changes to expect on your skin when you turn 50, to the perfect skin care products and routine for mature skin types. Plus, some skin care tips and advice from Linda who is happily loving her fifties with some tried and tested tips for you.

What Changes To Expect On Your Skin When You Turn 50

As we grow older, our skin undergoes various changes. It loses its elasticity, becomes thinner, and drier, making it more prone to wrinkles, age spots, and other visible signs of ageing. When we enter our 50’s, these changes become more noticeable. Here are some changes you can expect to see on your skin when you reach this milestone:

Fine lines and Wrinkles appear

As the skin loses its elasticity, wrinkles and fine lines become more prominent. These are particularly noticeable around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Some may even find the skin on their neck and décolleté starting to age with saggier skin and age spots.

Age spots and pigmentation

These are also known as liver spots and are caused by years of sun exposure. They appear as dark, flat spots that are often found on the face, neck, hands, and arms.

Dry Skin

As we enter our 50’s, skin produces less oil leading to dryness and flakiness. This can make wrinkles and fine lines more noticeable.

Thinning Skin

The skin becomes thinner as collagen and elastin production decreases. This can lead to a translucent appearance and increased sensitivity to the sun.

Sagging Skin

Loss of elasticity can cause the skin to sag, particularly around the neck and jawline.

Broken Capillaries

As the skin thins, small blood vessels near the surface of the skin can break, causing redness and visible veins.

To combat these changes, it's important to take good care of your skin. This includes protecting it from the sun, using moisturizers and other skincare products designed for mature skin, and eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants. While these changes may seem daunting, remember that ageing is a natural process and that there are many ways to embrace and celebrate your skin as it evolves with age.

Skincare Routine For Women In Their 50s

Below we have listed a step by step skin care routine for women in their 50’s but remember to substitute products you feel wouldn’t be right for your skin type or concerns.

Cleanse

AM: In the morning we recommend the Revitalising Cleanser, a gentle cream cleanser packed full of soothing Chamomile and Green Tea to gently, yet effectively removed impurities from the skin, whilst leaving it feeling cleansed and hydrated.

PM: We recommend a double cleanse every evening as a non negotiable for mature skin. Try the SKINICIAN Cleansing Balm to remove make-up, SPF and daily build up with this balm to oil cleanser. This should leave skin feeling thoroughly cleansed and nourished and this is one for the senses with it’s calming lavender scent, perfect for a calming evening routine.

Follow up with a treatment cleanser as your second cleanse. This could be the Revitalising Cleanser to make sure skin is thoroughly cleansed and soothed, or for those looking to brighten and smooth their complexion, we recommend our Advanced Pro-Radiance Enzyme Cleanser, packed full of AHA’s to gently exfoliate the skin, leaving skin brighter and smoother.

Toner

Apply a spritz of the Revitalising Toner all over your face after cleansing, morning and night to restore hydration levels, brighten and balance the skin. This toner can be popped in your bag and spritzed throughout the day also, to refresh tired skin and give skin an added boost of hydration when needed.

Serum

AM: Mature skin in it’s 50s tends to be drier and duller than it may have been previously, so why not add in a Vitamin C Elixir to your AM routine? Packed full of Vitamin C to speed up collagen production, Vitamin E to protect from free radical damage and Avocado Oil to deeply nourish the skin.

Vitamin C

PM: The mature skin buzz word - Retinol! Apply the Overnight Retinol Powerbalm to your skin after toning to wake up with smooth and glowing skin. Retinol helps to stimulate cell renewal, speed up collagen production and resurface skin leaving it glowing and plumped when you awaken.

Eye Cream

A layer of Peptide Eye complex, applied morning and evening to the eye area will help mature skin in it’s 50’s to look plumper and brighter. This lightweight eye cream also has SPF30 included so you can guarantee the area is being protected from potential UV damage.

Moisturisers

AM: The SKINICIAN day creams have all been formulated to include SPF30 for maximum daily protection. Our Advanced Time Delay Day Cream has been specifically formulated for mature skin types and is packed full of skin loving ingredients to tackle ageing skin, such as Regenacell which stimulates ATP and provides 65% more energy to skin cells and helps them work more effectively, for a renewed glow.

PM: Skin recharges and renews whilst it sleeps, so we created a night cream that does just that. The Advanced Restoring Night Cream supercharges your cells to renew whilst you rest. Formulated with a replenishing cocktail of ingredients designed to supercharge the skin cells leaving skin feeling soft, plumped, and glowing the next morning.

How To Manage Mature Skin In Your 50s

As we enter our 50’s, our skin undergoes many hormonal changes that can be difficult to manage. Skin may become thinner, drier, and more prone to wrinkles, age spots, and sagging. However, there are many steps you can take to manage mature skin and keep it looking healthy and vibrant.

Protect your skin from the sun

Sun damage is one of the primary causes of ageing skin. Make sure to wear SPF30 every day, even in the winter months or on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply every two hours if you are spending time outdoors.

Use skincare products specifically designed for mature skin

Look for products that contain ingredients like retinol, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, which can help to firm and hydrate the skin. Avoid harsh cleansers or exfoliants, which can strip the skin of its natural oils and exacerbate dryness.

Eat a healthy diet

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats can help to nourish the skin from the inside out. Choose foods that are high in antioxidants, like berries, leafy greens, and nuts, which can help to protect the skin from damage. Drinking plenty of water can help to keep the skin hydrated and plump. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water per day, and avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine, which can dehydrate the skin.

Get plenty of beauty sleep

Sleep is essential for healthy skin. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night, and try to establish a regular sleep schedule to help your body maintain its natural rhythms.

Consider non-invasive treatments

There are many non-invasive treatments available that can help to firm and tighten the skin, such as laser resurfacing or microdermabrasion. Talk to your dermatologist about which options may be right for you.

Linda’s Skincare Tips And  Routine

Name: Linda

Skin type: Mature

Being a pale skinned redhead, with very sensitive skin, I religiously used SPF to protect my skin on holidays, so I thought that I was protecting my skin from sun damage and my skin would be less wrinkled than some of my sun worshipping friends. But what I didn’t realise until several years ago, was that my skin needed protection everyday not just on hot days at home or whilst on foreign holidays. I discovered the SKINICIAN’s Advanced Time Delay Day Cream contains SPF 30 and now this is my go-to product to protect my skin 365 days a year. I even got my best friend to use it on our holidays last year instead of sun cream. It is super hydrating with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E and does not clog your skin like some other day creams for mature skin.

Entering my fifties, my skin is changing due to the fluctuating hormone levels. With hot flushes and night sweats, my skin is experiencing breakouts and redness, plus my already sensitive skin has become super sensitive. Advanced Calming Serum is a godsend, reducing the redness and sensitivity whilst soothing my skin. Also, sometimes when I feel hot and bothered, I spritz some Revitalising Toner to cool and refresh my skin. Very refreshing.

Whilst I use the Revitalising Cleanser and Toner, I mostly use all the products from the Advanced System. I love the way that all the products complement each other, and you can mix and match products according to how your skin is at the time.

A few times a week, I use the Advanced Pro-Radiance Enzyme Cleanser or the Advanced Pro-Radiance Enzyme Peel. The fruit acids and enzymes help to remove the dull dead skin cells, leaving my skin silky soft and refreshed. It feels like a “deep clean” facial at home.

My most recent purchase is the Ageless Peptide Eye Complex, and if the before and after pictures and testimonials are anything to go by, this may become my new favourite SKINICIAN Product. Watch this space!
