The team at SKINICIAN wanted to put their products to the test on real people with real skin concerns to see just how effective a SKINICIAN skincare routine can be.
This blog reveals Donna's acne skincare journey. This is the first of our 5 'Real Life Skin Journey's'. After reading this case study you will know how to get rid of acne and the best ways to treat acne with SKINICIAN products.
Skin concern: Acne
Donna applied for the program with the hope of finding a solution for her acne and post-breakout redness, (post-inflammatory erythema) and the scarring on her cheeks.
Above are some snaps of Donna's skin when she applied for the program. Over the years Donna had tried and tested various products such as tea tree cleansers, toners designed for large pores/ blackheads and had always reached for oil-free moisturisers. She had many treatments for blackhead removals and before now products had never given her visible, lasting results.
Common causes of Acne
Many factors can cause acne to appear on the skins surface. Below we have listed three of the most commonly known causes of acne.
- Genetics: Many people are genetically prone to acne. This means your genetics make this skin condition likely to occur.
- Hormones: Hormonal changes, such as puberty, menopause and those that occur during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy, can also lead to episodes of acne in women.
- Lifestyle - Stress levels, diet and lifestyle can play a role in causing acne. Stress triggers hormonal changes (production of testosterone) that may worsen acne in people already prone to pimples. If you suffer with Maskne from wearing your mask during the COVID19 pandemic we recommend reading our Maskne treatment blog.
Donna's Acne Treatment Plan
After a detailed consultation with SKINICIAN's skincare expert Lindsey Fenwick, a morning and night skincare routine was established. For the next 4-6 weeks Donna followed recommended routine and after only three weeks sent her after images to show us her amazing results.
Donna saw a visible reduction in new breakouts, her inflamed skin was healing and her acne scarring began to fade.
Donna's Acne Skincare Routine
Step 1 Cleanse
These Revitalising Cleanser helped clean and soothe Donna's irritated and inflamed skin and our Purifying Cleanser (which she used 2-3 times per week instead) helped regulate oil production and refine the appearance if large pores.

Step 2 Tone
This toner is a refreshing lightweight spritz that controls oil products reducing further breakouts and blackheads. This leaves the skin mattified without drying out the skin.
Step 3 Serum
This serum is applied after cleansing and toning. Donna used this to soothe angry inflamed skin. Formulated with antioxidants it acts fast to visibly reduce redness and soothe the skin.
Step 4 Moisturiser
Even if you have oily / acne-prone skin you should always use a moisturiser. In Donna's case, her skin was dry / acne-prone. We recommended our lightweight Revitalising Moisturiser. This is a triple-action moisturiser packed with ingredients that nourish and hydrate sensitive skin.
Step 5 Masking
It's important to mix and mask if you have a range of skin issues. For Donna, the green clay Purifying Mask was used on her breakouts and oily areas and the Revitalising Mask was applied everywhere else to hydrate and repair.
Step 6 Retinol
Retinol and other retinoids can reboot skin functions. When it comes to acne it can help unclog the pores and enable the skin to repair itself, which can reduce swelling and smooth the skin. Donna's acne scarring was something she continually struggled with when it came to her skin confidence.
After cleansing and toning in the evenings Donna applied her Overnight Retinol Powerbalm. With SKINICIAN's Retinol Powerbalm Donna was able to reduce and fade the appearance of her scars and her skin appeared smoother in just 6 weeks.
We are delighted with Donna's new found skin confidence. Over the coming weeks we will explore more skin concerns and share our skin journey results with you.
